This is a genuine, good condition US M1917 helmet shell. Helmet shell is in untouched condition, exactly as it came to us as part of a large lot of 1917's, 1917A1's, and even some British MkI helmets.
This was originally a US manufactured 1917 shell, as opposed to a new production 1917A1 shell. While this was manufactured during WW1, it was refurbished to 1917A1 standard via the paint job and textured finish.
Lot code on the shell is ZC179. The gap in the rim of the helmet, along with the ZC prefix on the lot code indicate US manufacture.
No liner is present on this helmet. No chinstrap is present. It is just a shell.
There is some rust on the rim. It would be a perfect candidate for restoration or display. Or maybe even making into a lamp?
