The M24 was the first “pocket-sized” military binocular ever issued on a large scale. After Operation Desert Storm, the military determined that more binoculars needed to be issued to more troops (part of the More Eyes on the Battlefield Doctrine), but they needed to be smaller and lighter. The Army developed a specification called the “M-24” which was designed to be a compact binocular that would fit in the pocket of a battle dress uniform (BDU) and be as rugged, have the same magnification, and nearly equal the optical performances of the bigger binoculars.
The most interesting part of the contract was that there have been many different manufacturers awarded the contract over the years to include L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, and Fujinon. Many argue as to which company produced the best one but all are pretty on par with each other in our experience.
